My AC Unit Smells Bad When I Turn It On.
Several odors and smells can emit from an air conditioning system. To pinpoint the exact cause, we will have to assess the condition. We have an extensive background in HVAC IAQ and can help you resolve the ‘stinky’ problem.

Air Conditioning Maintenance Tips:
- Ensure that nothing obstructs the A/C unit’s air intake around its sides and air discharge off the top. Blocked intakes around the sides can severely impact the system’s performance, while also causing premature equipment failure. Use this guideline but note that some models may require larger setbacks to obstructions (refer to your owners/installation manual):
- Side A (to building): min. 6”
- Side B (to one side): min. 12”
- Side C (service side): min. 24”
- Side D (remaining side): min. 24”
- Air filter maintenance: Make sure that the furnace filter is replaced as per the manufacturer requirements. That means your typical 1” filters need to be replaced every 3 months and your thicker IAQ filters between 3 months and a year. You can call our front desk for more information on your specific filter.
Note that ALL Haven Installations include a hospital-grade MERV16 Air Filtration System that requires an annual filter replacement.
- Make sure that no lawn sprinklers directly hit your ac unit.
- Pay attention to any abnormal sounds during the operation. Turn the unit off if it does not sound right to you!
- If your furnace is installed in the attic, ensure there is no water in the secondary protection pan (under the evaporator) and check this at least once at the beginning of the A/C season after the unit has been operating for about 4 hours.

Basic AC Troubleshooting Tips
- The compressor is starting, but the outdoor fan does not start. This could indicate a failed motor or failed start/run component. Turn the unit off and call for service.
- The outdoor unit is making a clicking sound, but nothing happens. There may be a tripped breaker and/or a failed fuse in the service disconnect. You can try resetting the breaker, but the unit will likely require service.
- AC trips the breaker repeatedly. Turn the unit off and call for service.
- After the A/C unit runs for a while, not much air comes from the vents. There is most likely a low refrigerant condition that is causing the evaporator to ice up and thereby block airflow. Turn the unit off and call for service.
- Water is running down my furnace during A/C operation – There is either a condensate backup or a failed primary condensate pan. This situation is serious as it can lead to mold growth and significant property damage if not addressed immediately. Turn the system off and call for service. You may also choose to run the system in fan mode to help dry the system up.
- My filter is super dirty and I can not get a new one today. What should I do? It is safe to temporarily run the system without a filter if you are in a bind, but don’t forget to replace the filter at your earliest convenience.
- My furnace is up in the attic, and when I run the A/C, water is leaking from the ceiling. Turn the system off now! There is a condensate leak that we need to assess and repair before the system is used again. If extensive repairs are required (and cannot be performed on the same day), we can offer you some portable A/C units to get you through the day/night. Get in touch with our FrontDesk regarding availability as we sometimes run low during heat waves.
- When I run my AC system, water comes from a little pipe up on a wall outside of my house. This indicates that the primary drain or drain pan has failed and the emergency drain has become active. You can operate the system, but you need to call us to assess the primary drain problem before more damage occurs.
Call us at (714) 332-6302 for any questions and concerns about your A/C unit!

What Are Common Signs That My AC Unit Needs Repair?
If your AC unit is not functioning properly, there are some common signs you should look out for, such as warm air coming from the vents, strange noises, a decrease in cooling effectiveness, and an unusually high energy bill. If you are experiencing any of these issues, it is best to contact a professional AC repair technician to diagnose and fix the problem.
How Long Does It Typically Take For An AC Repair Service To Fix My Unit?
The amount of time it takes for an AC repair service to fix a unit can vary depending on the complexity of the issue and the availability of parts. A reliable AC repair provider should be able to give you a timeline estimate of when the repair will be finished. In some cases, repairs can be completed in a few hours, while more complex problems may take several days to fix.
Should I Try To Fix My AC Unit Myself Or Call A Professional?
Self-diagnosing and attempting to repair your AC unit by yourself can be dangerous and lead to further damage. A professional AC technician has the expertise and specialized tools to diagnose and repair your unit safely and correctly. Also, attempting to do it yourself may void any existing warranties on your unit.
Water Is Leaking From The Furnace When I Run My A/C?
There are a couple of scenarios that could lead to water leaks from a furnace during a/c operation:
- If the water leak appears after rain, then there may be a leak in the furnace venting system on the roof.
- Condensing (high-efficiency) furnaces may have leaky hoses or clogged drain parts that need to be repaired or cleaned.
- The primary condensate drain may be backing up and causing the evaporator drain pan to overflow.
- The evaporator drain pan may have failed.
- The evaporator may be icing causing the leak.
- Poor maintenance – Dirty filter
All above conditions require professional service.

My A/C Won't Turn Off, What Can I Do?
First confirm that the thermostat is set to OFF. If this does not resolve the problem, service is required.
To turn the furnace/ac off, unplug it or turn the specific breaker off until the appliance can be serviced.
Call us to schedule your service appointment.
The Thermostat Is Set To Cooling, But Nothing Happens?
If the thermostat uses batteries, replace them or make sure that the existing batteries are still good.
If you recently replaced a filter inside the furnace, make sure that the furnace door was reinstalled properly.
Call us for more information if the above instructions do not resolve the issue.
My A/C Is Blowing Hot Air, What Can I Do?
When an air conditioning system blows hot air (in cooling mode), it indicates that the a/c unit (outside) is not operating. There are many faults that can cause this problem.
This problem will require service to resolve. Call us to set up a service appointment! Check our AC repair service in Orange County.
My A/C Is Turning Off Before It Reaches The Target Temperature, Why Does It Do That?
This can indicate that there is a mechanical problem that needs to be assessed and repaired.
You can:
- Check & replace the filter.
- Make sure all vents are open.
- Make sure all the grills are unobstructed.
Call us for more information if the above instructions do not resolve the issue.
