Father Junípero Serra founded Mission San Juan Capistrano during the Spanish era, and the indigenous people were called “Juaneños” in Spanish. The mission attracted Native Americans and Spanish settlers who established villages nearby.

In the Mexican and Post-Conquest eras, San Clemente was part of Rancho Boca de la Playa, granted to Emigdio Véjar by Governor Pío Pico in 1846. Ole Hanson, a former Mayor of Seattle and significant land developer, purchased it in 1925.

Hanson envisioned San Clemente as a Mediterranean-style coastal resort town named after San Clemente Island, discovered by explorer Sebastián Vizcaíno in 1602. His vision included architectural guidelines that preserved the area’s charm resulting in a mix of building styles still visible today.
