The Crystal Cathedral is a remarkable glass marvel completed in 1981. It was hailed as “the largest glass building in the world” at that time and can accommodate up to 2,248 people. The extensive use of glass creates an ethereal atmosphere with natural light illuminating the interior.

One of the world’s most prominent musical instruments resides inside the cathedral – the Hazel Wright Organ boasting 273 ranks and five manuals. Transforming From Crystal Cathedral To Christ Cathedral:

For over thirty years, the Crystal Cathedral served as the primary worship location for Shepherd’s Grove, formerly known as Crystal Cathedral Ministries, and a congregation of the Reformed Church in America. The church gained global recognition through its weekly television program, Hour of Power. However, financial difficulties led to a bankruptcy filing by the ministry in 2010.

In 2012, the Diocese of Orange acquired the Crystal Cathedral and its adjacent campus as its new cathedral. After an extensive renovation that accommodated Catholic liturgy while preserving unique architectural elements, it was consecrated and officially renamed Christ Cathedral on July 17th, 2019. This transition marked a significant chapter in building history and solidified its importance as the Diocese of Orange’s seat.

Revamping And Redesigning:

Adapting interior space for Catholic worship while maintaining distinctive architectural features required meticulous renovation work by Johnson Fain. Changes included enhancing altar-centered Catholic ritual with angled “petals” lining glass walls to reduce outside light; these petals will also feature exterior lights creating mesmerizing effects similar to a “box of stars” at night.

Additionally, crape myrtle trees now adorn the route from the parking lot to the plaza, symbolizing the progression toward the altar and the journey’s sacredness. The renowned Hazel Wright Organ was disassembled and then shipped to Italy for restoration before being repainted white, ensuring complementarity rather than a distraction from the altar.

Christ Cathedral unites and celebrates the diverse Catholic community in the region. Its altar holds first-class relics of saints of various descents, including American, Korean, Mexican, and Vietnamese origins. This reflects the Diocese of Orange’s commitment to inclusivity and honors its parishioners’ rich heritage.
