Discovery Science Center Orange County

Unleashing Curiosity Through Hands-On Exhibits

Explore the wonders of science at the Discovery Science Center in Santa Ana, California. This educational museum offers hands-on exhibits that ignite curiosity for both children and adults. The iconic ten-story solar array cube stands tall over Interstate 5, making it a must-visit destination for residents and tourists alike.

A Vision Transformed Into Reality

The vision for this world-class science center began in 1984 when two boards came together with a shared goal to teach children about life in Orange County during the 1900s. A funding feasibility study in 1989 helped gain county leaders’ endorsement, leading to the construction of this remarkable institution. Before its current facility was built, a smaller “beta” version called Launch Pad operated in South Coast Plaza during the mid-1990s.

Unveiling A State-of-the-Art Facility: Opening New Horizons

On December 17, 1998, the public accessed an impressive 59,000-square-foot facility. The museum transformed a former Bekins Van Lines depot into a hub of exploration and discovery. Mark Walhimer served as Vice President of Exhibits from 1996 to 2000 and played a crucial role in overseeing captivating exhibits.

Recognized Excellence: A Smithsonian Affiliation

Recognizing its commitment to promoting science education, the Discovery Cube Orange County became an affiliate within the prestigious Smithsonian Affiliations program in 2008. This partnership further solidified my dedication to providing engaging experiences for all ages.

Expansion: Unveiling New Possibilities

To meet growing demand and foster scientific learning, the Discovery Cube embarked on an expansion project. The first phase opened on June 11, 2015, with an impressive Discovery Pavilion spanning over 40,000 square feet and remodeled space totaling at least another four thousand square feet. Future phases include Life Sciences Hall, Courtyard of Learning, and Living Environmental Pavilion alongside IMAX theater and “green” parking facility unveiling new possibilities for visitors’ enjoyment.

Science Journey: Themed Areas

Upon entering the Discovery Science Center, visitors encounter a variety of themed areas that cover diverse scientific disciplines. Exhibits include the Science of Hockey, where guests can explore ice hockey’s scientific aspects with help from the Anaheim Ducks franchise. Dino Quest, an interactive work opened in 2006, transports visitors back to dinosaur times with life-size replicas and engaging displays. The Rocket Lab, Air & Space, Eco-Challenge, Dynamic Earth, Quake Zone, and Showcase Gallery (which houses traveling exhibits) are fascinating areas awaiting exploration.
