Heat Pump Rebates In California (2023)

The new Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 (IRA), signed into law by President Joe Biden on August 16, promises to bring much-needed relief against our current rapid inflation. In this post, you’ll find all the information you need about heat pump rebates in California – how to access them, what kind of savings you can expect from them, and more. Start reading and see how you can start enjoying the benefits of these important financial incentives!

Why Install Heat Pumps?

Heat pumps are quickly becoming popular for home heating, acting as an all-in-one solution for heating and cooling. Here is why many Californians invest in a heat pump:

Space Savings

Heat pumps occupy less space than traditional furnaces, making them ideal for smaller homes or businesses. Additionally, they typically come with no additional ventilation requirements, meaning that you can install the system without having to make significant changes to the structure of your building.

Cost Savings

The cost of installing a heat pump can be significantly lower than installing traditional heating equipment like a furnace or boiler. These initial savings will also continue over time since the energy used for heating purposes through a heat pump is much more efficient than other home heating systems.

Lower Utility Bills

Because they operate more efficiently than other forms of home heating systems, you’ll find that your monthly electric bill can be lower with a heat pump system compared to traditional systems like furnaces.  This can equate to considerable savings each month for places with mild winters or generally warm climates.

Better Air Quality

Heat pumps in California are incredibly effective when it comes to improving the air quality inside the building where they’re installed; air circulated through these systems filters out dust particles that may affect those suffering from allergy issues. They also draw humidity levels down during warmer months which helps improve comfort levels indoors even further.

Improved Safety

Every component within a modern HVAC (heating, ventilation & air conditioning) unit complies with strict safety standards. This ensures superior protection against gas leaks and short-circuiting if electricity comes into contact with water sources, such as drains/pipes, etc. Modern heat pumps help minimize any chance of harm occurring inside houses/businesses due being exposed directly by users interacting with unsafe parts inside the units.

Less Noise

Compared to regular combustion fuel-powered furnaces that produce noise while running, most contemporary heat pump models run almost soundlessly, allowing users to enjoy peace & quiet while being warmed up.

Why Switch To Heat Pump System in California In 2023?

California heat pump rebates and incentives have already kicked in, offering even more savings to those living in the state. Under the Inflation Reduction Act, two separate tax credits are available for individuals who install solar energy systems and those who make energy efficiency improvements at home: The Solar Tax Credit and The Energy Efficiency Home Improvement Tax Credit.

  • The Solar Tax Credit – Simply put, it grants a whopping 30% reduction in tax liability for your total solar installation cost. For every $15,000 invested in a solar installation, you can reduce your tax liability by up to $4,500. The best part is that it is guaranteed to remain in effect until 2032 and applies equally to residential and commercial owners.

The Energy Efficiency Home Improvement Tax Credit – This credit allows eligible individuals to deduct up to 30% of the costs incurred from upgrading their homes with energy-saving technology, with annual limits that vary by project. You can take advantage of these credits to save you money and help reduce your household’s carbon footprint.

What Rebates Are Available To Californian Homeowners?

California HVAC rebates 2023 offers an excellent opportunity for homeowners to benefit from the cost savings of energy-saving upgrades. This is through the High-Efficiency Electric Home Rebate Act (HEEHRA), HOMES (Home Owner Managing Energy Savings) Rebate Program, and more.

HEEHRA

These rebates are available for various heat pumps and provide additional financial assistance for low- and moderate-income households. Plus, the point-of-sale provision makes the rebate process simple and convenient. More specifically, the rebate amount is automatically deducted from the price at checkout. No need to follow up with an application or wait for a refund!

HOMES

This program provides performance-based rebates for retrofits to improve a home’s energy efficiency. Depending on how much energy the homeowner can save, they could receive various rebate amounts.

Others

California’s utilities offer various rebates and incentives for energy-efficient upgrades, including heat pumps, appliances, thermostats, and solar batteries. Tech Clean California and CLEANair Furnace Rebate Program also offer rebates for customers who install energy-efficient technologies. SMUD, PG&E, and SCE customers can benefit from these deals, saving money while making their homes more sustainable.

What Are Eligibility Requirements?

Meeting eligibility requirements for energy-saving programs such as HOMES and the High-Efficiency Electric Home Rebate Program is important in taking advantage of available incentives to reduce your long-term energy costs. To qualify for HOMES rebates, you must demonstrate that your project includes at least 20% modeled energy savings.

For those looking to take advantage of the High-Efficiency Electric Home Rebate Program, this program is exclusively available to low and moderate-income households. It is important to recognize the differences between eligibility criteria and ensure you meet these requirements accordingly.

What Types Of Heat Pumps Are Eligible?

The parameters for what California heat pump systems are eligible are simple: they must carry ENERGY STAR® certification. This certification considers criteria such as efficient use of energy and capacity, ensuring that customers receive the most value for their purchase. Heat pumps come in wide varieties, such as air source, water source, and geothermal, with ENERGY STAR® labels making identifying those that comply with the act easier.

What Is The Maximum Rebate You Can Claim?

The rebate you receive through heat pump incentives California is based on your income. Specifically:

  • If you and your family earn less than 80% of the median household income in your state, you qualify for a 100% rebate on all eligible purchases. For example, if you spend $10,000 on a heat pump and related water heater, depending on the details of your region’s program, you may receive up to $9,750 back.
  • If your household income falls between 80% to 150% of the median in your state, you could receive up to 50% of the available rebates. For example, a $10,000 heat pump rebate may qualify for a reimbursement of $4,875, depending on other factors too.

If your family’s income exceeds 150% of your state’s median, you will not be eligible for these rebates.

What Documentation Is Required?

Currently, no information is available regarding what documents will be required to secure a heat pump rebate. This information is anticipated from state governments and the Department of Energy in spring 2023, at which point state guidelines will be released and the tax credit and rebates will go into effect.

Save your receipt and declare it on your tax return to claim your credit once the plans are released.

Do I Need A Qualified Contractor To Install The New Heat Pump Systems?

When considering installing a new heat pump system, it’s important to consider hiring a qualified contractor. A reputable contractor will be certified and familiar with building codes and other relevant safety standards. In addition, many utility companies and programs offer incentives for proper installations through licensed contractors. For example, the Self-Generation Incentive Program in California provides homeowners up to $1,500 in rebates when a licensed professional installs an eligible heat pump.
